11/1/20 Locomotion (1992)

Locomotion (1992) by Prestige Softwareentwicklung GmbH, published by Kingsoft GmbH for DOS, Amiga, Atari ST, and Commodore 64. I didn’t expect to like this game so much, but it’s actually a blast. A pretty simple concept, flip the railway tracks to get the trains to their destinations. Even without instruction, it’s easy enough to grasp all of the game’s basics in minutes. Where it lacks in complexity, it retains depth, as the layouts of railways get increasingly busy and the player is forced to keep track of more and more things at once, flipping rails back and forth to pull off tight exchanges and avoid crashing. The game’s programmer, Andre Wuthrich has recreated it for browsers, and it’s quite fun. It fixes some of the slight annoyances I found with the original, namely trains crashing into each other at the station right as one spawns in, and it also has a neat soundtrack. It can be found at locolocos.com if you’re curious.
