This is where I flex my anime and fighting game muscles. The game with too many colons in its name, Melty Blood: Actress Again: Current Code, has some fantastic music. Character select screens are often overlooked when talking about fighting games, but it only takes a glance to the likes of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 or Skullgirls to see how central to a title’s identity they can be. Character select music, then, is one of the most important aspects of these menus. With no set emotion or theme to go off of, like you would have with a battle theme, what should these tracks be going for? For Melty Blood, the answer is just to be catchy as hell. I could listen to this theme for hours; the slow zoom in that jumps right into a tense string melody, the organ comping beneath it only to take over and relieve that tension with a groovy solo, even the subtle sounds of the wind rushing past. When I hear this song, I think mystery, excitement, magic, all of which describe the aesthetics of Melty Blood. In fact, most Type-Moon games have those elements, which is fitting, seeing as Melty is their big crossover title.
