9/18/20 Music Spot // Castlevania- Symphony of the Night: Wood Carving Partita

I’m currently in the midst of my first playthrough of this game, and one of the absolute best things about it is the soundtrack. This plays in the Long Library, and is perfect for such a location inside Dracula’s castle. It’s tough to describe why exactly I associate the harpsichord with high ceiling-ed, gothic architecture, but its staccato hits over the sweeping strings give this sense of scale, large, yet reserved, refined; it never breaks too loudly. The ensuing melody, where both instruments are laid on top of each other and the harpsichord jumps to a different key– just wonderful. This game’s music is legendary, melodic yet atmospheric, a true achievement that demonstrates the sound capabilities of the PS1 and is why, I think, it’s one of the defining games of the system.
